August Yoga Story: Abigail Swift

Pilgrimage of the Heart Yoga > Yoga > August Yoga Story: Abigail Swift

Our yoga community and Sangha is full of passionate yoga students like member, Abigail Swift who shared how she stays motivated and how a regular practice has helped her grow. Here’s what she had to say!

What first brought you to yoga?
I first started yoga after college when I moved to Orange County and ran my first marathon. I noticed my body needed more than running and it led me to yoga, plus my older sister was a significant influence. After moving to San Diego five years ago, I had stepped a bit away from yoga but realized with the amount of driving and training I was doing I needed yoga back in my life, and I especially needed it to rest my mind and get in-tune with my thoughts.

What do you love most about yoga?
I love that when you step on your mat, it is your practice, and only you can listen to your body and know what you need and your limits. I love seeing my body get stronger as well as reaching different limits that I didn’t know were possible. The things I have learned on the mat have easily translated to my everyday life especially breathing and staying at peace when situations get tough.

What is your favorite pose and why?
I don’t think I can narrow it down to one posture; I love using the strap to open up my hamstrings and IT band (reclining leg stretch), I also love just going through sun salutations with your breath. You can never go wrong with a solid reclined spinal twist.

What do you do to stay inspired or motivated in your practice?
There really isn’t anything I need to do to stay inspired or motivated, I know my body needs yoga, and I want to do it for my body, so it is easy to go to class or roll out my mat in the living room. I put my body through so much with running, biking and swimming that I want to take care of it and allow it to be as strong and healthy as possible!

Anything else you’d like to share?
I feel so lucky to have Pilgrimage in my neighborhood, and I have just seen myself grow as a yogi over the last four years. There are so many amazing instructors, and such a variety of classes offered that I can fill any need I might have, and I love having the opportunity to bring friends and family especially my Mom!
