Yoga Story: Patricia
What first brought you to yoga?
I started DOING yoga when I was in high school. One of the girls on my swim team was into bikram yoga and she mentioned how great it felt, so I tried it! I really enjoyed bikram yoga because it helped to stretch out my muscles. I know I didn’t take it as a serious practice then, and in my mind it was just another way to stretch.
Now that I am older, I feel that I am more in-tuned with my body, and I’m not just DOING it to do it. Being a member of Pilgrimage, I have learned that yoga has a much deeper meaning then just stretching. I have to thank the amazing teachers at Pilgrimage for always inspiring me and challenging me, physically and spiritually. Each class I take has new fundamentals, and each teacher teaches me something new through their words, and through the poses.
What do you love most about yoga?
I LOVE hot yoga. I feel that it clears the toxins in my body, it relaxes me after a long day at work, and it also gives me energy to keep going. I love that I don’t have to be the most flexible person in the room, and I can just be me. I can take my body where it needs to go. If I’ve had a rough day or not, I can take it easy, or I can push myself a little further than the day before. Most of all I LOVE that nothing matters but ME, paying attention to my body, and what it needs in that one hour of class – it’s my time.
What is your favorite pose and why?
I love dancers pose. I feel like a ballerina when I do the pose. I love that it pushes me to focus all my thoughts and all my energy in one place, BALANCE.
What do you do to stay inspired or motivated in your own practice?
I work as a school counselor, so yoga is my medicine. I feel that yoga has really helped me to stay balanced and patient when working with my kids at work. I would be a hot mess without yoga!
