Think of the magic of that foot, comparatively small, upon which your whole weight rests. It’s a miracle, and the dance is a celebration of that miracle.
The holidays are a time of celebration, a time of hope and renewal. Life presents us with unexpected changes and challenges, yet if we can maintain an awareness of the daily miracles that occur, we can stay rooted in the underlying joy of each transition that occurs.
The weight of the body rests on the foot. Stability and balance, which are essential in life, come from a combination of strength and flexibility. So much depends on details, on the small things we rarely notice. In our asana practice and our daily lives, we often find ourselves in situations that require balance. Practicing balance on the mat can be an excellent start. In tree pose, we face the challenge of balancing on one foot. Tree pose begins with our drishti—our visual focal point—with the concentration of our eyes and mind. Around that, we can build our foundation. Once our roots are established, then we can rise upwards—like a tree—and expand into life.
The word celebration is rooted in an awareness of the miracles of life that occur each day. Our breath, our bodies and the world around us are an opportunity for expansion and growth. If we listen and observe, we can find our dance of celebration, express ourselves and share the joy with others.
